I am a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Medical Data Science Group, beginning in August 2024. My current research focuses on model selection and training in the context of distribution shifts, exploring a diverse range of applications including medical imaging, knowledge retrieval, and image-text integration. Additionally, I am the co-founder of UTHEREAL, a startup affiliated with the ETH AI Center, which specializes in personalized generative AI solutions.
From 2020 to 2024, I pursued my PhD within the Information Science and Engineering Group under the supervision of Prof. Joachim Buhmann. My doctoral research centered on developing robust machine learning models to address bias and distribution shifts, with a particular emphasis on medical applications. I contributed novel advancements in representation learning for image segmentation, unsupervised learning, anomaly detection, and various clinical settings.
I hold an Integrated Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. During my undergraduate studies, I conducted research at the Instituto de Telecomunicações from 2015 to 2017, where I explored clustering algorithms for biosignal processing, with applications aimed at preemptive epileptic seizure detection and emotion estimation in autistic patients. Following this, I interned at two startups: CardioID Technologies, where I worked on a prototype for blood pressure monitoring using PPG and ECG, and Cleverly (acquired by Zendesk), where I contributed to the data annotation team. My master’s thesis, conducted at the Champalimaud Research Institute, focused on developing deep learning models for the detection and segmentation of pulmonary nodules in CT scans.
Beyond my academic endeavors, I am deeply committed to fostering innovation and sharing knowledge within my community. I have actively volunteered as a curator for a TEDx event, chaired a local IEEE student group, co-founded the Portuguese Biomedical Students Association, and established Lisbon’s first Deep Learning Meetup Group, which now has over 2,000 members.
